MINUTES

The meeting was called to order at 6:40 p.m. by President, Jeff Bettencourt.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Shirley Allen, Jeff Bettencourt, Jackie Heath, Abraham Irodistan, Sally Smith and Kim Tolleson.

MINUTES: Shirley noted that the minutes of the November 16, 2005 meeting were distributed to all members; minutes were reviewed and approved. There was no meeting in December, 2005.

TREASURER’S REPORT:

Shirley reported the following:
Beginning Balance on November 1, 2005: $13,668.74 Total of (4) checks: 2,384.45
Ending Balance on November 30, 2005: $11,284.29
Beginning Balance on December 1, 2005: $11,284.29
Total of (5) checks: 513.46
Ending Balance on December 30, 2005: $10,770.83
The Treasurer’s report for November and December, 2005 was accepted.

2006 MEMBERSHIP FEE: Shirley reminded members that the Annual PPBA Membership fee of $30.00 is due on February 1, 2006 for the fiscal year 2/1/06 – 1/31/07. Invoices were mailed to all members on December 13, 2005. Membership fees must be received by February 1, 2006 for your business to be listed in the NEW 2006 Pleasure Point Guide.

CORRESPONDENCE: (1) The December issue of the Santa Cruz Small Business Monthly was received on 12/12/05; (2) January, 2006 Newsletter from the Live Oak Neighbors liveoakneighbors@yahoo.com received on 1/4/06, announcing their meeting on 1/10/06. “Walking Safely in Live Oak” would be discussed with County Representatives; (3) December, 2005 Newsletter from the Live Oak Neighbors received on 12/12/05 announced their Holiday Pot-Luck Dessert & Recycled Gift Exchange would be held on 12/13/05.

COMMITTEE REPORTS: No Action Is Taken By Any Committee Without PPBA Member’s Approval.
DESIGN & PROMOTION: Chair, Jeff Bettencourt (479-9098). BANNERS: Jeff said the ten “Welcome To Pleasure Point” banners placed on street light poles were not installed correctly by Triad Electric, and winds have blown them down. Triad will be replacing them at their expense. Phase II will be discussed at a future meeting. “2006 Pleasure Point Guide”: Membership fees must be received by February 1, 2006 to be listed in the “Guide”. A map will include all Pleasure Point locations. Deadline for member’s advertising in the “Guide” will be February 15, 2006; ad cost to be determined soon. Advertising will help pay the printing costs. It was decided that Shirley will call all members who have not paid the 2006 membership fee and also tell them about advertising in the “Guide”. Kim Tolleson will contact members who are interested in advertising.


WEB SITE: Jeff said we should do some brain-storming about updating the PPBA Web site, such as adding monthly minutes, an application form and a calendar of events, listing meetings and mixers.

SIDEWALK SALE: Kim said our businesses are encouraged to hold sidewalk sales on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

GOVERNMENT RELATIONS: Chair, Ken Defrees (476-6461). Shirley reported that on January 11th, Abbas Haghshenas went before the Planning Commission Board again, after making more changes in his plans for his planned development (Pleasure Point Plaza) at 3911 Portola Drive, Santa Cruz. On behalf of the PPBA, Shirley submitted another letter to the Planning Commission Board in support of his project. Abbas said his plans were not complete, so the Board continued this to their February 8th Agenda.

MEMBERSHIP: Chair, Shirley Allen (479-4331).Shirley reported that she and Kim Tolleson determined that a special letter to all non-members in the area and some others that had expressed interest in joining the PPBA should be sent a special invitation to join. Shirley drafted a special letter and mailed it to 54 non-members on January 16th, along with a calendar of events, an application form and a 2005 PPBA Member Roster. Membership changes: (1) RAE PROPERTIES & HOME LOANS has moved to Aptos; (2) Paul Jones Entertainment & (3) Pleasure Point Custom Cleaning have decided not to renew their membership due to exploring other venues. WELCOME TO THE FOLLOWING NEW MEMBERS: (1) Steven Gross (Window Wizards); (2) Ken Dobberpuhl (Functional Fitness); (3) Tony Martin (ShutterBug Chocolates); (4) Liz Darling (Namaste’ Yoga and Wellness Studio) and (5) Hannah Pitstick (Capitola Veterinary Hospital). There are 100 PPBA members.

HOLIDAY MIXER: The Annual Holiday Mixer held on December 7, 2005 at Modern Life Home Furnishings was a huge success. The 43 people attending the event brought canned food for donation to the Second Harvest Food Bank. Attendees received a “goodie bag”, containing a PPBA T-shirt and various discounts to some of our member’s businesses. Thank you to Kim Tolleson for hosting the mixer and also to Paul Gallus (Portola House Restaurant) for catering the food. During the festivities, a surprise presentation was made by Jeff Bettencourt to Shirley Allen. She was given a beautifully framed “Lifetime Achievement Award” certificate, recognizing her as a “founding member of PPBA and in appreciation of her many years of service to the Pleasure Point Community ~ you are the spirit of Pleasure Point”. A beautiful rose corsage, an exquisite Corinthian wind chime and lovely card were presented to her from Jeff Bettencourt, Kim Tolleson and Paul Gallus. Shirley has continuously been involved since the “steering committee” days began in 1993 and has served as Secretary/Treasurer since the PPBA was established. On a personal note from Shirley: “Thank you to everyone I have had the pleasure of working with to form this wonderful association. My hope from the beginning was that my work to help the membership grow would see the Pleasure Point business community get to know each other…and I like what I see! Thank you for the wonderful recognition from the bottom of my heart”.

PPBA MEETINGS: Meeting date, time and location have changed! Beginning Wednesday, February 1st, regular monthly meetings will be held on the FIRST Wednesday of each month at 12:00 p.m. at PPD Multimedia, 3600 Portola Drive, Santa Cruz. Please mark your calendars!!

ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Jeff Bettencourt stated he is unable to serve another term as President and Secretary/Treasurer, Shirley Allen may be undergoing knee surgery in the near future, so a new slate of Officers is needed. Jeff Bettencourt moved to nominate Kim Tolleson (Modern Life Home Furnishings) for President; Sally Smith seconded the motion; passed unanimously. Kim Tolleson moved to nominate Jackie Heath (Real Estate agent at Premier Real Estate) for Vice President; Sally Smith seconded the motion; passed unanimously. Jackie Heath nominated Sally Smith (Paradise Surf Shop) for Secretary/
Treasurer; Abraham Irodistan seconded the motion; passed unanimously. This election will be effective on February 1, 2006.
