MINUTES OF THE APRIL 5, 2006 BUSINESS MEETING

Call to Order

The meeting was called to order by President, Kim Tolleson, at 12:05 p.m.

March Minutes

MOTION: Jeff moved to adopt March minutes as posted on the PPBA website, Jackie seconded, motion passed unanimously.

Santa Cruz County Visitor’s Council Presentation – Gary Green

Gary gave an overview of the advertising package for the SCCVC Visitor’s Guide.
  • 105,000 copies printed each year with 35,000 mailed directly to various county businesses
  • Two-page top banner ad would cost $1500 to be paid by the PPBA
  • One-page top banner ad would cost $750 to be paid by the PPBA
  • Individual ads would run $595 for a 1/12 page ad, and $995 for a 1/6 page ad to be paid by Pleasure Point businesses wishing to participate voluntarily. These ad prices also include all print and web listings, e.g., restaurant listings, lodging listings, etc.
  • Key point for PPBA would be to get an editorial written up about Pleasure Point history, etc. on the opposite page from our ad, if PPBA were to do an ad.
  • Christina Glynn is editorial contact
  • $600 to put The Pleasure Point Guide in the SCCVC’s Beach Services Kiosk near the Boardwalk and in their Ocean Street office.
  • Further discussion weighing the pros and cons of kiosk vs. ads in SCCVC Guide. Item will be an action item on the May business meeting agenda.


President’s Agenda Overview – Kim Tolleson

  • Kim thanked the following individuals: Jeff Bettencourt for his work on the PPBA Guide and Jean Bathke for distributing The Guide.
  • Transfer of Treasurer duties from Shirley to Sally is postponed from March until April.
  • Brief discussion of cell phone tower installation at Public Storage on Portola Dr. Circulated letter for sending to Public Storage to discourage the installation of the cell phone tower.
  • Supervisor Jan Beautz holds meetings on Mondays before the Tuesday Board of Supervisors meeting. She is available to discuss concerns of her district. Meetings are held at 5:30 p.m. at Mad Jack’s Coffee Shop in the East Cliff Village Shopping Center.

Marketing Director’s Report – Jeff Bettencourt

  • Streetlight Banners: Triad Electric is waiting for the rain to let up before reinstalling the Welcome to Pleasure Point Banners.
  • PPBA Guide: Discussion about positive response to The Pleasure Point Guide. Typos will be corrected before the next printing.
  • Mixers: Flyers for Monthly Mixers will be available at the mixers and updated to reflect mixers for 90 days out.
  • Working on web proposal for PPBA website
  • Discussion of different ways of promoting PPBA sidewalk sales for Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, including announcing at mixers, making posters for distribution to PPBA members, post on website, email blasts, and possibly offering a low cost banner for each business who would like to purchase one. Kim and Jeff will come up with info for posters, banner proposal, etc.

Director of Government and Community Relations Report – Shirley Allen

  • Correspondence received:

    1. Notice from Santa Cruz County Public Works regarding short-term rate increases for extension of refuse, recycling and yard waste collection services;

    2. March 2006 issue of Small Business Monthly.

    3. Waste Management bill for waste cans at bus stops erroneously billed to PPBA. Shirley will follow-up next week to make sure bill is sent to County.


  • Membership: Working on getting Rip Curl to join PPBA

  • March 14th Live Oak Neighbors Meeting: 50-60 people in attendance, mostly there to discuss density impact and other concerns for development of condos on 41st Avenue near Spa Fitness Center. Developer has been asked to reduce scale of project from three stories to two.

  • East Cliff Village Shopping Center: Barry Swenson Builders representative Mike Perkins discussed new plan for old Polivio’s Restaurant building, including a 5500 square foot restaurant with four apartments above.

  • Speed reduction on Portola Drive: Sheriff Robbins promised a “speed sign” on Portola that tells you how fast you are going. John Presleigh, Assistant Director of Public Works, is researching feasibility of reducing speed limit on Portola and possible stop sign at 36th Avenue. Shirley will follow-up on these projects in the coming weeks.

  • Transportation Funding Task Force: March 23rd Live Oak Workshop was well attended. Task force is made up of working groups to come up with feasible ideas for solving and/or improving Santa Cruz County transportation problems.

April 26th is next workshop from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Live Oak Senior Center, 1777 Capitola Road. More workshops are planned through June 7th.
